Hydraulics of Pipelines was written as a textbook for students of advanced hydraulic design, however it covers a number of useful topics for practicing engineers in the fields of valve and systems design. The subject of cavitation is thoroughly covered in three chapters including fundamentals and the influence on piping systems, valves, orifices, pumps, elbows and other piping components. Examples are provided to demonstrate methods for calculating the points at which different levels of cavitation are reached along with suggestions for avoiding it. Hydraulic transient (waterhammer) analysis is covered in detail including a thorough explanation of the concept, causes and suggested methods for controlling them. A section on the selection and proper operation of centrifugal pumps is included along with a discussion on potential problems with starting, operating and stopping pumps to avoid excessive pressure surge.

The Instrument Society of America's Process Measurement & Control Division sponsored this hard cover volume which contains 13 chapters and covers such diverse subjects as: Control valve components, definitions, terminology, materials and specifications. Detailed discussion on body types and trim. Extensive discussion on specifications. Detailed discussion on body types and trim. Extensive discussion on sizing including considerations of cavitation, flashing and noise. A full chapter on noise prediction. Positioners and related accessories. Installation and maintenance. Each section is written by one of over two dozen experts in the field of control valves who each contributed in their area of expertise. It blends together their collective knowledge on the subject matter in a convenient single volume text. The fact that control valve technology is still a developing science particularly in the areas of noise, flashing and cavitation, can be seen in the slightly differing approaches taken by the various authors in predicting these phenomena. Although this is a control valve handbook, it is still an excellent reference book for anyone with an interest in the general subject of valves.

Valves, Piping and Pipelines Handbook is, as its title states, a primer on piping components with major emphasis on valves. In addition, a fair amount of space is given to the theory of fluid flow and design of components in piping systems including formulas and examples of pressure drop, cavitation, noise and stress calculations. This 600 plus page hard cover manual is composed of ten sections including such major topics as: Types, Design & Construction of Valves. Valve Services. Ancillaries (actuators, seals, packing). Pipelines (couplings, expansion joints, corrosion and cathodic protection, cleaning). Performance (fluid flow calculations, noise and cavitation control, losses due to fittings). The book is published in England, however users in the U.S. were kept in mind by the authors who have taken care to list most all equations in both metric and customary units and to point out differences in terminology when appropriate. A good all-round reference for anyone in the field of valve or piping system design.
